Natural energy drink full of electrolytes to keep you hydrated and energised

In my last post we looked into electrolytes, what are they? And what are they for? Hopefully that post helped you to understand the importance of electrolytes. This blog is all about being natural and healthy, so in this post I will be telling you about how you can make a healthy sports energy drink that will restore depleted electrolytes and give you that much need energy boost. Whether you’re playing sports, working out or just active, this is the drink you need to keep your energy levels highs.

During physical activities your body will be using a lot of energy and sweating a lot. When you sweat your body loses water and salt, Sodium and Chloride are lost in high amounts and magnesium, potassium and calcium are lost in lower amounts. An hour of intense exercising will result in the loss of about 2 litres of water through sweating and about 2 or more grams of sodium. This means it is essential to not only consume water but to also consume sodium after intense exercise or if you are in a hot climate. For this reason we will be adding pink Himalayan mountain salt or sea salt to the drink.

Coconut water – per 1 cup
sodium 252 mg
potassium 600 mg
Magnesium 60 mg
Phosphorus 48 mg
Calcium 57.6 mg

When you sweat you also lose potassium, magnesium, calcium, manganese and phosphorus including other trace minerals. Two litres of sweat contains 0.30g of calcium, 0.02g of magnesium, 5g of potassium, 6 micrograms of manganese and 1.44g of phosphorus. For this reason we will be adding coconut water to the drink, it has a high level of electrolytes to replenish any that have been lost and to keep you topped up.

The body makes energy from carbohydrates and fat. The quickest way of making energy is form consuming carbohydrates, or in other words glucose. Glucose is found in sugar, honey, maple syrup etc. So by adding this to our drink we are giving ourselves a quick energy boost.

All we need to do now is bring this together into a healthy, natural, tasty energy sports drink. Below are three different flavours; mango, pineapple and strawberry. To give the drinks their unique flavours you will need to juice the pineapple and the strawberries. For the mango it will be a little different, you will need to blend the mango until you create a smooth pulp, then sieve through a cheese cloth to extract the purée. If you make more than needed you can store the left over in the fridge and the puree should last up to 3 to 5 days because we will only use a few tablespoons to add flavour.
